Frequently asked questions:

Is venereal disease the same as STD?

An STD may also be called a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD). That doesn't mean sex is the only way STDs are transmitted. Depending on the specific STD, infections may also be transmitted through sharing needles and breastfeeding

What causes venereal disease?

There are three major causes of STDs/STIs:

  • Bacteria, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
  • Viruses, including HIV/AIDS, herpes simplex virus, human papillomavirus, hepatitis B virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Zika.
  • Parasites, such as trichomonas vaginalis, or insects such as crab lice or scabies mites.
Is venereal disease curable?

Of these 8 infections, 4 are currently curable: syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. The other 4 are viral infections which are incurable: hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV or herpes), HIV, and human papillomavirus (HPV).
